Apparently, the Sheriff is one of those liberals that get a pass on the laws that apply to everyone else (non liberals I mean). From the comments:

This story has developed legs. On all three cable news shows this morning, each spinning in their own direction. CNN going for illegal alien shooter not competent to stand trial. Not an evil man, just confused and dazzeled by Federally owned firearm just laying around.

Even worse than anyone thought. The gun was stolen "this summer" from a Bureau of Land Management agent. It remains to be seen if it was really stolen or lost through carelessness.

The real danger is untrained Feds having access to and carrying guns. After all, the Secret Service leaves their weapons lying around in the Capitol. And what exact reason may be given for BLM agents carrying guns, besides intimidating law abiding Americans?
