Armed Suspect Barricaded in Kemah Walgreens

Post by WildBill »

League City police officers say an armed suspect barricaded himself inside a Walgreens in Kemah.

Customers and employees ran out of the store when they spotted the man with the gun.

One employee did stay inside, locking herself inside a room, police say.

After nearly an hour, the suspect then shot and killed himself.

Police say there are no injuries, and the case is still under investigation.

Here is an update with a lot more information.

An armed robbery suspect who was barricaded inside of a Walgreens in Kemah shot and killed himself during a standoff with officers Tuesday morning, League City police confirm.

The suspect has been identified as Bryan Winslow Phillips, 30.

Police say the trouble began Monday afternoon when they believe Phillips shot and killed Derek Zagone after an argument over a firearm.

Police say Phillips thought Zagone stole his gun and confronted him at Baypointe Manor Apartments in Texas City around 2 p.m. During the confrontation, both men pulled out guns.

Zagone, 32, was shot once in the chest and was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Phillips fled the scene. Texas City police detectives were investigating the possibility that Phillips was acting in self-defense.

At 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, Phillips robbed an emergency room in the 3000 block of West Marina, according to police. Phillips allegedly entered the hospital with a gun and threatened staff as they ran from the building. He then stole medications and left.

Police received a report at 8:35 a.m. that a suspect stole a Lexus at gunpoint from a yacht sales business in the 2500 block of S. Shore Boulevard.

Police caught up to Phillips, who led them on a chase to Walgreens at 156 East FM 518.

Phillips exited the vehicle and fired shots at officers as he ran into the store.

"He fired a couple of rounds and he was going into the store," Lt. Carl Nunn, with the Kemah Police Department, said. "He fired some rounds into the pharmacy window to get into the glass door.

Once behind the pharmacy counter, Phillips began pulling drugs off the shelves and ingesting them, according to police.

Several customers and staff inside the store fled when Phillips entered, but the pharmacist, two other employees and one customer were held hostage inside for a brief period, police said.

Ricky Berg's wife was the only customer in the store at the time.

"She (saw) a guy come in (the parking lot), driving real reckless, and then run inside the Walgreen's and she said put a gun to her head," Berg said.

League City SWAT officers surrounded the store and began negotiating with Phillips.

The officers were able to view Phillips' actions through a live video feed from the store's security cameras.

They convinced him to release the four hostages. A short time after the store's pharmacist was released, police saw Phillips shoot and kill himself at 9:45 a.m., police say.

No citizens or first responders were injured.

In May, Phillips was convicted in Galveston County on charges of theft and delivery of a controlled substance and sentenced to six months probation.
