There was an obvious failure in the victim selection process.
Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence. - John Adams

Shooting through the door....maybe not the best move, depending on where those rounds could have ended up. Where I live firing through the door like that assumes zero risk of a round leaving my property, but it's not a risk I'd have wanted to take when I lived in town.

And, that's the second home invasion attempt where home owner shot through the door in a few days, other was in Houston

I still recall in Houston or Pasadena, a man shooting through his door (shotgun) and hitting a child playing in the Apartment Complex Courtyard

May not be the best move but at that point is was 2 on 1 and at least one of them was armed and advancing on the resident. At that point in the attack, a possible stray bullet is not something I'd be willing to die over preventing.

Unless you have a bulletproof house you always risk a stray making it through a window, door or soft wall.

A stray round is different than blindly shooting several rounds through a door without knowing who is on the other side or where those rounds might end up....like in a neighbor across the street say, who had come out on his front porch to see what was going on or have a smoke.

Maybe in this case that path was clear and there was no chance of that happening.....where I live there is only a very narrow azimuth where a bullet could leave my property, and an even narrower azimuth where if it did it would have any chance of hitting people, livestock, or property.

Well normally shooting through the door is a no-no for me but in this case (he actually saw the armed men approaching [1 already on the porch] and shut the door before they got to him) I may very well have done the same.

but like you said, there is much info left out of this. I am rural and much of Hewitt is as well, so I'm responding based on my situation more than what's reported.
