CHL as ID

Post by Glockster »

Today I went to my county's sheriff to be fingerprinted for an out-of-state permit application. I produced my CHL in response to the request for ID, and was sitting down filing out my cards when I was told by the deputy that I needed to produce my DL. I asked why. The response was "because I said so" and my reply was to politely say that "I'm sorry but my CHL is required to be accepted as ID in TX now." Response was, "says who?" My response was to say, "Well, the TX legislature said so when they passed HB 2739 this year. That was followed by the deputy walking away, around the corner, and discussing it with someone else ("this guy says that he can use his CHL for ID" and a response to her saying "well he can't drive with it") and then shuffling and back to me where not another word was spoken to me other than for the deputy to say that she'd never heard of that law. My response was to say that you'll probably find that most CHL holders stay current on the law as it impacts their CHL and that I had it handy on my iPhone if she wanted to jot down the section of code. Got fingerprinted and on my way. :txflag:

Wow you have more guts than I do... I like to think I would have done the same thing...but I don't know. That said I have gone to my local PD a number of times for out of state permit prints...they do them free. Mostly they just asked me why I wanted an out of state permit, and I just said I travel there. I think I'll use my CHL some time for ID. Just because I can.

I just got a Federal government PIV(ID) for some contract work I'm doing in Washington. I use it at the airport sometimes just because I can...
4/13/1996 Completed CHL Class, 4/16/1996 Fingerprints, Affidavits, and Application Mailed, 10/4/1996 Received CHL, renewed 1998, 2002, 2006, 2011, 2016...). "ATF... Uhhh...heh...heh....Alcohol, tobacco, and GUNS!! Cool!!!!"

Well, actually, if you were carrying, and they asked for ID, then you legally had to present both per 411.205.

Yes. When she said that, with a tone that clearly was intended to convey to me that if she told me to that I must comply, I mentally took a deep breath and was determined to remain polite but firm in explaining. I was thinking that this is good practice for January 1st (remaining polite, calm, respectful). I'll give her the benefit of doubt by saying that I don't think that she was meaning to come across that way but thought it was a pretty good insight into what folks might go through when having to explain to someone who should know the law, what the law actually is (in her position she clearly verifies ID all day for taking prints so one would hope that she'd know what the legal requirements are for ID). Again, I was determined to have an interaction that ended well.

TSA refused to accept my Texas CHL a while back - after a while, a TSA guy told me that the issues was that with the CHL, the picture was provided by me and mailed in, versus taken at the DL office as with driver licenses.
What's in it for me ? :patriot:

Hmmm. The photo in my CHL is exactly the same used on my DL.

It probably has more to do with the upgraded requirements for DLs. I forget the name of the law, but if a state doesn't comply, those DL holders won't be able to use them for TSA ID purposes.
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

I had to renew my federal id to access the NASJRB and had to bring 2 forms of id. Brought my DL and CHL. They accepted both.
