Secret Service Report - spotting a weapon
The Secret Service just released a report on how to spot someone carrying a concealed weapon. Only six pages. Interesting to read, though much is just common sense type stuff.

A good reference and checklist for LTC carriers. Thanks for posting!

While visiting the Alamo a deputy tapped me on the shoulder, he asked me to step aside then asked me if I was carrying. I had looked around before entering and did not see any signs and told him so. He said as long as I had a chl I was good, showed him my license. I asked if it was showing and he said he was trained to see, he was nice about it.

Interesting read for sure. I work in a 'rough-ish' part of Houston, and never know who might walk into my store. Several of the stores surrounding my work have been robbed at gun point (hence my reasoning for applying form LTC). Maybe I'll be able to spot someone concealing illegally before it's too late

A lot of it will be body language, coming in and out without buying anything or looking at anything in particular, wearing clothing inappropriate for the weather conditions, hooded sweatshirt in warm weather, hands in pockets all the time, dark glasses after dark, lurking around the exterior during the times when there are the fewest number of people around. Never hesitate to call in any suspicious people, they may be harmless, but better safe than sorry.

I've never seen a BG with such good trigger finger discipline.
Take a look at the image on the first page.

But at least he's holding it in the way prescribed in the BG handbook one handed and sideways. He must be a newbe BG he didn't know to keep his finger on the trigger at all times.

Re: Secret Service Report - spotting a weapon
Easier to just assume everyone is armed. More important to note what they doing and how they are acting.
It doesn't hurt to "think you know' IF and WHERE a weapon exists, but in the end...it will come down to where are their hands and what are they doing with them. Hands kill.
Interesting read.

This is a good article and I am guilty of several of the nuances as a newer LTC holder. I still haven't been able to carry regularly due to work restrictions, so still trying to get "comfortable in my skin" so to speak.
That said, I find it kind of laughable to take advice from any agency plagued by its inability to keep staff from walking on a tab with hookers thinking it won't come back on them.

I have met a few Secret Service men, their training to earn the position is second to none, however, once they have been with the department long enough to be assigned POTUS duty, some of them become complacent, and feel entitled. Also the POTUS dictates a lot of the their attitudes, that's why security alarms were turned off at the WH, lax discipline while on overseas duty, etc.
I know that there are a lot of great people working for the Secret Service, unfortunately we only hear about issues when they drop the ball.

Good read, I have made it a habit when in public to look for some of these indicators on people.

I see the suspiciously sweatshirt in unreal weather conditions a lot around here. Why would you wear a hoodie when it's 100+ and humid unless you're up to something?Jusme wrote:

I've carried at the Alamo several times. Either this guy wasn't on duty or I've gotten better about my tells.striker55 wrote:While visiting the Alamo a deputy tapped me on the shoulder, he asked me to step aside then asked me if I was carrying. Many teens will do that.... my own included. Maybe not 100 degrees, but I have seen him wear them in 85 degrees...DavidsCrazyGirl wrote:I see the suspiciously sweatshirt in unreal weather conditions a lot around here. It goes with the ridiculous knit cap. I think they're just trying to cover up their unwashed hair.cyphertext wrote:Many teens will do that.... my own included.
