I just have a quick question about federal facilities
I'll be darned if I can remember the answer to this question........
I have a friend who was remanded into custody at his plea hearing Friday a week ago, on federal charges, and he is being held at FCI Fort Worth until his sentencing hearing - which isn't until late June/early July. My wife and I are part of a small group of friends and family from whom he would like visits while he is waiting for his sentencing. (We have no idea where he will be ultimately incarcerated, but he's being held there for now. I'm not free to discuss his charges, but they are federal, non-violent, and carry a pretty significant sentence.) Anyway, it being a federal facility, I can't remember if I am allowed to secure my firearm in the car while visiting, or do I have to arrive unarmed?
Thanks.

If it's federal property you are parking on, then you cannot have it in the vehicle. I would look for a parking lot close off of the property and secure your firearm and all should be well.

Looking at the map, the dark gray area appears to be the actual federal property. Not sure where you could park close and be able to walk over.

Re: I just have a quick question about federal facilities
Hey TAM, I am familiar with that area, and leaving anything in a vehicle off site around there would be a bad idea. The best place to park would of course be the secured parking at the facility, but as far as where to keep your gun, I don't have a good answer. South of the facility is TCC South campus, but the walk to the front of the facility is pretty long, also I don't think they allow parking for non-faculty or students. If you know anyone who lives around there, maybe you could leave you gun(s) with them temporarily.
Sorry I can't be more help.

What is the federal statute that supports that?Keith B wrote:If it's federal property you are parking on, then you cannot have it in the vehicle. I would look for a parking lot close off of the property and secure your firearm and all should be well.
18 USC 930 says...
So leaving in the car would seem to be ok.(g) As used in this section:
(1) The term “Federal facility” means a building or part thereof owned or leased by the Federal Government, where Federal employees are regularly present for the purpose of performing their official duties.
4/13/1996 Completed CHL Class, 4/16/1996 Fingerprints, Affidavits, and Application Mailed, 10/4/1996 Received CHL, renewed 1998, 2002, 2006, 2011, 2016...). "ATF... Uhhh...heh...heh....Alcohol, tobacco, and GUNS!! Cool!!!!"

You may be correct on that. Not sure if that have signage otherwise at the entrance.ScottDLS wrote:What is the federal statute that supports that?Keith B wrote:If it's federal property you are parking on, then you cannot have it in the vehicle. When I worked at NASA JSC they wouldn't allow firearms on the entire property.Keith B wrote:You may be correct on that. But if you go to Space Center Houston, you can keep them in your car.

I think it's a matter of regulation and federal criminal statute. 18 USC 930 makes building carry (where posted) federal misdemeanor (fairly serious one, up to 1 year jail). The parking lot rules...like at the post office are more minor offense under different US code and would generally result in a $50 ticket, or loss of federal employment or some other penalty.WildBill wrote:When I worked at NASA JSC they wouldn't allow firearms on the entire property.Keith B wrote:You may be correct on that. This "makes sense" in that it is the rule. I never really wanted to find out firsthand.ScottDLS wrote:I think it's a matter of regulation and federal criminal statute. 18 USC 930 makes building carry (where posted) federal misdemeanor (fairly serious one, up to 1 year jail). On a side note, once I used my CHL as my second ID to renew my badge.
I didn't have my passport with me so I asked if I could use my CHL. She said that as long as it wasn't expired I could use it.

I used my TX CHL as second ID to get into the Pentagon for a meeting before I got a Federal contractor ID.

Re: I just have a quick question about federal facilities
Thank you. He got caught up in something he was unable to escape without help, and he did not seek that help until it was too late. Instead of trying to evade the responsibility for it when he got caught, he surrendered completely to the process, has sought and received counseling and good legal advice. His lawyers said that with these kinds of charges, anything but a guilty plea and waiver of indictment would be viewed very poorly by the court and extend his sentence. His case could have been assigned to one of two federal district court judges, one of whom had a reputation for sometimes extending mercy, and the other of which has a fierce reputation as a "hanging judge". His case drew the hanging judge, so he's expecting to get the maximum sentence.treadlightly wrote:Peace and best wishes for fairly applied justice for your friend, TAM.The Annoyed Man wrote: I have a friend who was remanded into custody at his plea hearing Friday a week ago, on federal charges
He has spent nearly every waking moment since in scripture, pastoral visits from our pastor, and confessing to those of us who stuck by him the full extent of what he had done. I was the first non-family member he confessed to. It has been extraordinarily difficult, not just for him, but for his family and friends. He has a young wife and 3 boys - aged 2, 5, and 10, and their sons are going to have an absent father for 5-7 years of their most formative times (depending on whether or not he can get a downward variance in the sentencing guidelines). It's a terrible situation. My wife and I committed to walking with them through it to the end. His brother in law and I have pledged to step up and be the older male figures in those boys' lives until their dad gets released. And my Lifegroup guys have pledged to help keep the home they had just moved into well maintained and the yard kept up until my friends can get it sold.
It's just sad. It is the first time I've ever walked through something like this this alongside someone I know well, and he is the first friend I made in Texas. He's a great guy, his sins notwithstanding. Several of us have written character letters to the judge, but I am not optimistic that it will have any effect on his sentencing decision. He's a real hard-nosed judge. I tried to respectfully tell the judge that his sentencing decision will condemn 4 innocent people along with the prisoner. I asked if it was at all possible that he show some mercy in the light of the family, while still seeing justice served. The whole thing is distressing.

I applaud your efforts to testify and help your friend and their family through this difficult time.
