Crazy Canadians

Post by DSARGE »

My in-laws are coming into town on Monday. They are from Sask., Canada where the gun laws (espscially handgun) are VERY restrictive to the point it is almost impossible for an average citizen to own one. He loves coming to the states as he goes nuts shooting my guns. He plans on spending lots of time at the range and pushed his trip up a day when I told him about a range that rents full autos. I totally blows his mind that we can not only own as many as we want, but that we can carry. We used to go camping in North Dakota when I lived there, and he would strap on my western holster and Ruger .22 and would not take it off! He asked to take a picture in front of the Alamo with it on!! He is very serious and safety minded on the range, but is like a kid at X-Mas. I usually shoot little if any at all--as I love watching his face. The Mother in law and Wife already stated that we weren't spending ALL the time shooting. Guess sometimes we take for granted all our freedoms.

When my son in law's Japanese colleague found out that he (the son in law that is) was shooting on a team with me, he went nuts, insisting on buying extra ammo for me so I would take him shooting, and that was only rifles. He had a similar fascination for our freedom to own guns.

Japanese people are often far more obsessed with guns than people claim americans are, they have a thriving industry that makes replica guns that often cost most than their real counterparts.

I have a Japanese house mate that I recently took shooting for the first time. She was very apprehensive about going, but once we got there she had a total blast. I have a picture of her reaction to shooting my Mosin-Nagant 91/30 for the first time... it's priceless. She had a HUGE smile on her face. All I have for rifles is a Marlin .22 and 2 Mosin-Nagants... quite a step up. I had started her out on the .22 just so she got used to aiming and shooting, then moved her up to the big guns. Most of the people I take shooting will only take a couple of shots on the Russian rifles, since they aren't used to that much recoil. She's built like a typical Japanese, and must weight like 85 pounds. She liked that gun so much she went through an entire magazine and change before putting it down. It was really rewarding to be able to give her an experience she never could have had in Japan, and that she loved it so much.
