Arizona LTC Utilized by Texas Citizen
I have been carrying with an Arizona LTC for years secure in the knowledge that it was legal for a Texas citizen to utilize the Arizona license rather than obtaining the Texas LTC. The reasons for doing so have nothing to do with legal issues but more of a philosophical issue. A very close friend of mine just completed his Texas training and during the class brought up to the individual giving the training the issue of a Texas citizen carrying on an Arizona license. He was informed that this is illegal. A Texas resident is not legally allowed to carry in Texas without holding a Texas LTC and cannot utilize a LTC from another state to do so. I keep abreast of all current Texas laws, or so I thought, and have never heard or read such a statement before. I remember Democrats in the last session attempting to pass such a restriction but with no success. Did I miss something in Texas law or is this instructor more than a little off the mark?

Thank you for the prompt response.

I'm sorry your friend had the misfortune to take the class from one so ignorant of Texas law. At least you avoided wasting your time and money on "alternative facts" by opting for an Arizona license.Overthehill wrote:A very close friend of mine just completed his Texas training and during the class brought up to the individual giving the training the issue of a Texas citizen carrying on an Arizona license. I received my application packet from AZDPS yesterday and look forward to joining you.

They were fairly quick on the turn around when I did mine many years ago. Hope they are still that fast.
Re: Arizona LTC Utilized by Texas Citizen
The only thing you need to remember with an out of state license is that you are legal everywhere a Texas license is except "gun free school zones."

And any LEO's carrying under LEOSA without a Texas LTC.apostate wrote:MeMelYup wrote:The only thing you need to remember with an out of state license is that you are legal everywhere a Texas license is except "gun free school zones."The same as long guns or MPA car carry.
The good news is that if the OP happens to be in Arizona, he can carry near a school there, while I (as someone with only a Texas LTC) cannot. This might be a good reason to get a non-resident permit / license from every state I can.

I have mixed feelings about this. On its face, I really like the idea......but then I remember that it involves the fedgov't in another aspect of gun laws, and fedgov't's record is not so good in that regard. And, even assuming that it could pass with a republican majority in both houses, a republican president, and a majority of governors in the GOP, that could ALL change every 2 to 4 years. It's inevitable that we'll have another democrat controlled congress and White House, and democrats could gain gubernatorial seats. What happens then? Will they "tune up" the national reciprocity law by subjecting it to federal standards for carry licenses, to be determined by democrats?crazy2medic wrote:Can you say NATIONAL RECIPROCITY!
So while I like the idea, I am leery of it.

Also, if we go national, what will happen to us in "gun free school zones"? Will we be required to follow current law for out of state licenses and MPA?

That's exactly what they'll do. Just look at the CDL. It's now standardized across state lines with hoops to jump through to maintain it. DOT physical every 1-2 yrs depending upon your health. Wouldn't take much for them to say everyone needs a mental evaluation and criminal background (tougher than current) for a LTC and then make those standards arbitrarily high and unreasonable to obtain. The Annoyed Man wrote:I have mixed feelings about this. Re: Arizona LTC Utilized by Texas Citizen
I like the idea of National reciprocity, but I also agree with the concerns expressed in this thread. I fear that this would give the Feds a reason to "standardize" not only license requirements, but also things like carry restrictions.
I would probably prefer that we just enumerate certain minimum rights that all citizens have (not tied to a license). Things like the actual right to carry a weapon while driving through a state, even if you happen to stop overnight, or are subject to an unexpected delay (car breaks down, missed flight connection, etc). I'll take a beefing up of rights in that area along with our current reciprocity situation. There is just too much risk if we go with full National reciprocity.
If one is willing to put in some effort to get a few non-resident licenses along with your Texas LTC, you will end up with full carry rights in most states. The ones missing tend to be places that aren't really a part of America anyway. They are SINO's (States In Name Only). In reality, they are part of a separate, Socialist, country.

You know what's sad about so many of us NOT supporting national reciprocity, or at minimum being extremely leery of it? That we know a relative handful of people can misuse it to completely block our right to self defense, or at least make it very difficult to do so. The whole thing smacks of oligarchy, and I really don't think that's what the Founding Fathers intended.
