18 USC 930 prohibits possession in a federal facility which is defined as a federally owned or leased building or portion thereof and does not include parking lots.

Note that post office CFRs do include all post office property including parking lots.

TAM,
First off, very sorry to hear about your friend & his 'life trials'. In the end, with the support of family and friends, it may be a blessing with a new beginning.

I don't normally troll prison blogs & support groups, but your question got me curious & this one popped up:

http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/archiv ... 10038.html

Someone quoted an excerpt from the TDC manual regarding LTC'ers & procedures for securing the pistol/notifying the gate guards (might be dated, though, & if correct only applicable to Texas prisons, not the federal one you're planning to visit).

Here's the website for the Ft Worth prison you're talking about, & it doesn't mention anything about guns in the parking lot (just to not loiter there longer than 30 minutes).

https://www.bop.gov/locations/instituti ... /index.jsp

I'd suggest either contacting them prior, or just going unarmed for the first visit to get a feel for things & asking what is allowed/prohibited. There's quite a detailed procedure for everything else spelled out in their downloadable visitation regulation.

Best regards,
Mike

Thank you for out all for the kind replies, and Mike S. for the links. I actually had downloaded that visitors document for FW BOP, and like you find no mention of it, and that is why I posted the thread. I guess I'll try calling the appropriate department and confirm yes or no. I didn't place any conditions to my friends on my willingness to help. If I have to disarm to serve, then I'll disarm. I'd just rather not have to.

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with BOP guidelines, but from what I understand from my colleagues in TDCJ, they are more strict than state prison regs. Our state regs allow officers to store their weapon in their car if it is behind two locks (i.e. your locked car doors and a trigger lock/case/locked glovebox/etc), but we do not allow visitors to bring weapons past the highway gate. By coming onto the grounds (into the parking lot) you automatically submit to a vehicle search and if you refuse or are found to be in possession of something you shouldn't your visitation is permanently revoked. From what I understand BOP only recently allowed their officers to store weapons in their car, so I'd bet anything they won't let you. Hope that helps, and sorry for the bad news. Due to the increased threat of harm being done with a weapon if an offender were to escape, prisons tend to be very strict about them.
