I also considered going the az route, but only for the reason that it is $80 cheaper than the current standard tx resident fee. Before I pondered the az non resident route I looked over the tx laws concerning a tx resident having a non resident permit from a reciprocating state. I am no attorney, but as mentioned earlier in this thread I can find nothing in texas law that says a tx resident has to have a tx resident permit to carry in texas.
Next I approached a san antonio police officer and asked him about how he might treat a tx resident who is carrying with an az non resident permit. He clearly stated in no uncertain terms that he doesnt care where their permit was issued, as long as he can check and verify that it is current and valid. He also said that he finds it difficult to believe that any of his fellow officers would be anal enough (his words) to start digging around regarding whether this person should have a tx permit if they live in texas. He said as far as he knows, there is no texas law on the books that requires tx residents to have a tx permit before they can legally carry in tx. Therefore his opinion is the same as mine, there is no law that says a tx resident has to have a tx permit to carry in texas.
After all that bull, I ended up just getting my tx ltc permit. After submitting everything to az, I was told by az that instructors holding handgun courses MUST be NRA certified before they will accept their certificate. My instructor can certify ltc people and police officers, but he isnt good enough to be acceptable in az. Well...Instead of paying another 40-60 to take another course by an nra approved instructor, I just paid the 80 difference and applied for the tx ltc, which is waiting to be printed as of this writing.

I applied a little over a year ago for an AZ license so I could pick up Nevada. Shortly after I got my AZ license Nevada recognized TX. Anyways all I had to send AZ was my TX CHL. They took that. I bet after your TX LTC comes in AZ would have no problem with that. Crazy isn't it.Bodeneth wrote:I also considered going the az route, but only for the reason that it is $80 cheaper than the current standard tx resident fee. Hrmm....ok. Well thats good to know. I may have to give that a shot. Even tho having an az permit is virtually the same as having a tx permit, reciprocation-wise, I may try it just so i wont feel like they won haha. I just think its a little silly of az to be in bed with the nra to the point whereas an instructor is qualified enough to certify a tx LEO to carry a weapon, but not good enough to certify me to get an az permit....which btw...its a constitutional carry state so none of their people need to even take a course.
As for my tx permit....my application has made it thru every stage, including the background check, and all I am waiting for is for it to be printed and mailed to me. I will likely have it by the end of this week.
