It's an absolute concern to me every year when driving through Illinois.
In the Illinois case, I disassemble the firearm(s). I lock the components in a safe, put that safe in a part of the vehicle that isn't accessible from the inside and further separate the ammo.
If that isn't enough I'm not sure what else to do.

I have read that since Illinois has now passed a concealed carry law, it is legal for a non-resident with a CHL in their home state to transport a loaded handgun in their car. If someone is simply driving through Illinois, this is a simple case. However, if someone is staying in Illinois, moving the firearm from the car to the hotel room or residence where they are staying must be done legally, which normally means unloaded and in a case.

(e) Nothing in this Act shall prohibit a non-resident from transporting a concealed firearm within his or her vehicle in Illinois, if the concealed firearm remains within his or her vehicle and the non-resident:
(1) is not prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm under federal law;
(2) is eligible to carry a firearm in public under the laws of his or her state or territory of residence; and
(3) is not in possession of a license under this Act. If the non-resident leaves his or her vehicle unattended, he or she shall store the firearm within a locked vehicle or locked container within the vehicle in accordance with subsection (b) of Section 65 of this Act.

A few decades ago, I went into the service and was stationed on California. I was stopped driving a buddy's truck. In this truck was a pistol in a locked case behind the seat. Now, at the time in Texas, if you were pulled over, you told them right off the bat that there was a gun in the vehicle...the troopers and such appreciated that. In California however, it is not appreciated the same. I told the CHP that there was a gun in the truck and before I finished the sentence, I was staring down the barrel of a pistol. I almost lost control of my bodily functions. So, from that point on, I find out how it is expected to be handled in each locale before I enter that locale. Hence the 'when in Rome, do as the Romans' type approach...

You decide for yourself how you want to conduct yourself. My advice may not even be worth what you paid for it much less the two pennies some folks charge...

im not traveling up north to "anti states" as some people call them and the two states I will be traveling to are reciprocal states so I will handle it like I would here in texas, carrying or not hand them dl and chl

if I travel to another state and im not carrying on my person or concealed in car and get pulled over for traffic violation and I give officer my dl and chl and leo asks if I have a weapon and I answer honestly no will my car be probably searched
