XDM-45 Compact 3.8
Well, I pulled the trigger today, so to speak, on a new XDM-45 Compact 3.8 in Stainless steel today. I found mine at the local Academy in Grapevine. I had looked at a black one in the same store yesterday, and they were asking $649 for it. I handled it some and really liked the way it fit my hand. It just felt right.
Today, I found myself at Basspro Grapevine and so I moseyed over to the gun counter to see if they had one and find out what they were charging for it. They had the stainless model, but they were asking $799 for it—WAY too much. So on my way home I stopped back at the Academy store, thinking that I'd go ahead and buy that black one. But when I got there, they had the same stainless model Basspro had, but for $699 instead of $799, or $50 more than for the black one. I had the opportunity to compare both guns side by side. I liked them both, and they are both handsome pieces. But I figured that this being Texas and given the buckets of sweat I'm capable of generating on a summer day, the stainless gun seemed like the better choice so I bought that one instead.
I still feel pretty good about it. I might have been able to find the same gun cheaper, but I'll take a $100 savings over the Basspro price any day.
I can't wait to go shoot it, so I'll probably start to break it in Tomorrow after church. I'll let you all know my results, but I'm sure they'll be fine. I've had a little bit of experience shooting an XD9 and an XD40, and they were very pleasing to shoot.
Now the big question...... WHO makes an OWB holster for the XDM-45 Compact? The included plastic paddle holster is right handed, and I'm a lefty. Galco doesn't list it in their Springfield line. Neither does Desantis. Don Hume doesn't. I'm sure somebody does....I just haven't seen one yet specifically for the XDM-45 Compact. The slide profile is different enough from the XD series that I'm not sure that an XD holster would fit. If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears.

Re: XDM-45 Compact 3.8
Congrats on the new purchase. This is one of the pistols I'm considering adding to my collection soon.
As for the holster issue. It appears Raven Concealment has something that will work, but the wait is long. I just placed an order with then and their current lead time is 4 to 5 months. Also I bet Tucker Gun Leather could make something up for you. Also Rogers Custom Kydex doesn't list that specific model but they seem to pride themselves on being able to do custom work so I might contact them as well.

I bought a silent Thunder for mine. I'm pretty sure they make wrong handed verisons.

Re: XDM-45 Compact 3.8
Do the XD holsters fit the comparable XDM pistols? For instance, will a holster for a 4" XD45 Compact fit the XDM-45 Compact 3.8?

I looked at those, but their website says it's for the 9/40 guns. Does it also fit the .45?bronco78 wrote:I have two GALCO's for mineThe Annoyed Man wrote: Now the big question...... WHO makes an OWB holster for the XDM-45 Compact? T

They are a tight fit and took some work to get the thumb break strap to work..... .... try one your self in the store and see if you think it's worth the effort....The Annoyed Man wrote:I looked at those, but their website says it's for the 9/40 guns. I should have mentioned the fitting issues...

DeSantis Thumb Break Scabbard Belt Holster is supposed to fit off the shelf for the XDM in .45, but I do not own one

Re: XDM-45 Compact 3.8
Congratulations TAM! I'll await your range report along with everyone else. :)
Based on the profile of the gun as well as you looking for holsters, do I assume correctly that you plan on carrying it? Come to think of it, I don't recall reading your normal carry setup... Will you share details of how this one may fit in? I don't own any Springfield handguns, but my father, brother and multiple friends do... So I've shot maybe six different models (1911 and XD/M) and have liked them all. The only trouble any of them have had with theirs was with aftermarket sights that were put on incorrectly. Obviously no fault of Springfield's. :)
If you do plan on carrying this, what ammo? I use Winchester's Ranger ammo based on (among other things, like it feeds fine and I shoot it decently) Massad Ayoob's recommendation.
I'm no help on holsters, sorry.
Congrats again!

Re: XDM-45 Compact 3.8
Hello JMPJr. Yes, I plan on carrying it. I carry almost all of my handguns at some point or other, but I do have a "carry rotation" of guns that I bought with carry in mind. As far as how the XDM would fit in.....I used to own a HK USP Compact .40, which is in the same class of guns as this one, but I sold it because I'm not a huge fan of the caliber. Nothing wrong with it....it just doesn't speak to me. I like to have guns in three basic sizes: pocketable, compact, and full-size. When I sold the USPc, I was down to pocketable and full sized, with the exception of my 3" Kimber which I currently have up for sale right now (viewtopic.php?p=683297#p683297" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). I also own a 5" Springfield (and everybody ought to have at least one 1911 in their safe), but the Kimber is a single stack gun, and I wanted a double stack compact; and I specifically liked the XD series from the two I had previously fired in 9mm and .40 cal. Also, I had purchased a Kahr CW45 which was being carried a lot more often than the Kimber, so that's why I decided to sell off the Kimber instead of one of my other guns.JMPJr wrote:Congratulations TAM! I probably keep more guns in my carry rotation than a lot of people do, but I don't regularly use most of them. My CW45 gets carried about 8 or 9 days out of 10, and a pocket pistol most of the rest of the time. I rarely carry a full sized gun anymore. In fact, if the XDM45 works out well, I may even sell my M&P45. My son may buy it from me too, so I'll give him first crack at it. We all joke about never having enough guns, but I (gasp) seem to have arrived at "enough guns" to suit me, and I'm actually considering thinning the herd a bit.
As far as how I carry, I'm not particularly remarkable. I normally use OWB holsters these days. I used to use a Minotaur MTAC for IWB carry and really liked it, but my back has deteriorated to the point where IWB carry causes me pain. I'm concentrating on obtaining an OWB holster for the new gun for that reason. Later, I'll also add a holster body and mag carrier for my shoulder rig.
As far as .45 ACP ammo goes, I carry either 230 grain Federal HST or 230 Speer Gold Dots in my larger guns, and 185 grain Corbon +P DPX in my smaller .45s. In my PM9 I carry 115 grain Corbon +P DPX. And in my .357 snubbie I carry Hornady 125 grain .357 Critical Defense. But I would tell you to try different brands, find a couple of brands/types that work well in your gun, and then stick to those and don't worry about it. The old Federal Hydroshok is supposedly an outdated design these days, but I'm not seeing anybody volunteer to step in front of one. The reason I say find a couple that work is that one or the other may not be easily available the next time you're buying ammo.
Hope that helps.

I asked Dan over at Zlogonje Gunleathers if he was making pistols for this gun yet and he said the dummy guns weren't available yet.

Spoke to a vendor at the Killeen gun show yesterday, he had holsters for the XDM Compact .45 and stated that all of the holsters were built and hand boned using dummy guns....Jumping Frog wrote:I asked Dan over at Zlogonje Gunleathers if he was making pistols for this gun yet and he said the dummy guns weren't available yet.
